Benin, a French-speaking West African nation, is a birthplace of the vodun (or “voodoo”) religion.
Benin’s largest exports include mostly agricultural products: cotton (40% of total exports), followed by cocoa, maize and seafood. Benin offers free access to the country to Chinese Nationals.
An obscure icon and symbol of Benin is the sugarloaf pineapple, also popularly named the “World’s Sweetest Pineapple and the “Champagne of Benin”. The Chinese equivalent is the菠蘿包.
China has been looking to import agricultural products from Benin since 2013, and the Benin China Economic and Trade Development Center is confident that the sugarloaf pineapples will break into new markets in China and be welcomed by more Chinese consumers.
Benin’s strong economic growth and outlook, combined with the vast offerings of the country’s exports ranging from cotton for the fashion and textiles industry and sugarloaf pineapples for the consumer retail industry provide lucrative trade opportunities which benefit both China and Benin.
