Interview with South Africa |
1. Are there any cultural highlights you would like to share on your country? |
South African art has always taken on the unique flavour of the country. From the 4 000-year-old cave paintings of the San Bushmen – the richest collection of rock art in Africa – to the homegrown conceptual art movement that sprang up as apartheid came to an end in the 1990s and the most recent contemporary museum in Cape Town, ZEITZ MOCAA. South Africa’s history of art is closely tied to the political landscape, and most times reflects that landscape. |
2. Are there any special exhibits/ cultural items that people shouldn’t have missed at your Pavilion? What’s so special about it? |
South Africa’s diverse culture is also mirrored in our cuisine, which is why food and beverage importer, Lekker Laa, will offer some of the South African’s premium wines and other favorites flavors. |
The import spectrum covers, Meat to bottled and canned goods and South African Favourites like Rooibos Tea, Boerewors, Biltong, Dry Wors and spectacular wines. Lekker Laa will also be giving away some goodies at the booth. |
3. Are there any artists from your country that you would like to introduce? |

In 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mia embarked on a new venture, Sugar Asylum. Baking sugar cookies and creating bespoke edible artwork was her way of coping with the increasing pressures and stresses of the pandemic. Mia has called Hong Kong home since 2012 and today divides her time between graphic design, illustration, and her baked masterpieces. |
4. Are there any special exhibits/ cultural items that people shouldn’t have missed at your Pavilion? What’s so special about it? |
Wildlife photography will be represented by Tanya K, ( known as Tiana Kotti in the commercial photography industry ) Tanya K has studied sustainability in HKU space and despite her commercial and fashion photography background has a big interest in supporting wildlife rehabilitation and conservation, there for 20% of all profits from print sale will be donated to CROW, the longest running wild rehabilitation center in South Africa. |
5. Would you like to share any stories/cultural highlight of your country to people in Hong Kong? |
South Africa boasts a number of homegrown exports who have gone on to create remarkable bodies of work as well as contributing to the global art discourse. Among these are William Kentridge, Zanele Muholi, Kemang Wa Lehulere, David Goldblatt, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi and Mary Sibande. We’re also very proud of icons such as Esther Mahlangu, a painter of large-scale works with references to the Ndebele heritage, who has exhibited and collaborated with international artists including Yoko Ono. |
6. Is there any Cultural Performance you will arrange at the exhibition? Would you please give us some background information and highlight on the Cultural Performance (if any)? |
Cultural performance by Ms Lolo on 24 September. She is one of the first female AfroBeat singers to pioneer this African genre in Asia. Her music oscillates around the African sound while her vocal capabilities bring a completely fresh feel to the game. Her musicianship is encapsulated in her music that is filled with layered harmonies. |
In December 2021 She released a debut album MsLolo – A Different Breed which is available on all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal. |
